The traditional stains for cytology preparations are modified Wright’s stain (Wright-Giemsa) and May-Grunwald Giemsa. Over the past few years, however, very good quality, rapid Romanowsky stains have been developed for cytology and hematology use, and these are now often used by professional veterinary diagnostic laboratories. Many different brands of rapid stain are available; more than one should be tried in order to see which is best suited to a particular practice. All are equally rapid but some are easier to complete in a practice environment. Many can be adjusted by returning a finished slide to the stain for deeper color reaction, or if overstained, color can be removed by placing the slide in alcohol. Formalin-fixed material must be stained with either H&E or Papanicolaou stain.
