| Diseases of the Gallbladder and Extrabiliary System: Overview |
|
|
| Icterus is often the presenting sign of diseases of the gallbladder and extrahepatic biliary system. Ascites may be present if bile is leaking into the abdomen, causing bile peritonitis. Higher bilirubin levels in the abdominal effusion than in the serum can confirm leakage of bile into the abdomen or bile duct rupture. Icterus may not be the presenting sign in malignancies of the gallbladder. |
