| Fractures of the Shoulder |  |

| Fractures of the distal scapula (tuber scapulae) and proximal humerus (lateral tuberosity) are the most common shoulder fractures. They usually result from falls or kicks. Lameness is severe and sudden in onset. Often, there is much local soft-tissue swelling and hematoma formation. Diagnosis is confirmed radiographically. Conservative treatment by prolonged stall rest often results in improvement. Surgical treatment can be successful in selected cases. Unless treated surgically, both types of fractures heal with fibrous union. The prognosis is poor if the articular surfaces are involved. |
