| Fracture of the Stifle |
|
|
| Severe fractures of the stifle involving either the distal femur or proximal tibia are uncommon. The associated damage to the femorotibial joint, ligaments, and menisci, and marked soft-tissue swelling make treatment in adult horses difficult or impossible. Fractures of the patella usually cause much less severe lameness and swelling. Radiography is necessary to confirm the diagnosis. Patellar fractures may respond to conservative treatment or, if a large bone fragment is involved, require surgical repair. Fracture of the tibial crest also occurs occasionally and requires surgical repair. |
