The Merck Veterinary Manual Online is made up of three primary sections:
the Top Navigation Area, the Table of Contents Area, and the Main Content
Area
Table of Contents Area
The Table of Contents Area lists the titles of each section of the Manual.
Selecting a section title causes it to expand and reveal the chapter titles
grouped within that section. Further selecting a chapter title updates
the Main Content Area with a list of all the subchapters within that chapter.
The first half of the Manual is arranged into anatomic systems, and specific conditions
are located in the system that is primarily affected. Conditions that may affect
more than one system are covered in the section Generalized Conditions. The second
half of the Manual covers special topics or disciplines.
Note that by clicking the X within the Table of Contents title, the user can hide
the Table of Contents in order to display more of the text in the Main Content
Area.
Main Content Area
The Main Content Area displays the text of the Manual. A typical subchapter
page has navigation "breadcrumbs" to orient users to their current
location in the Manual, as well as a hyperlinked outline of the content
contained within the page. Selecting an outline topic moves the browser
to that section of the subchapter. From there, the user may scroll through
the content or return to the outline by selecting the link labeled "Return
to Top." Users may print the entire subchapter by selecting the print
icon.
The following features are also found within the text:
Images and TablesThese include thumbnail images of any supporting
photographs, illustrations, or video or audio files, as well as links
to any tables. Selecting these thumbnails or links will allow users to
view the image, file, or table in a separate window. Users may print
still images or tables by selecting the print icon.d
Cross ReferencesCross-reference hyperlinks are embedded within
the text. Selecting a cross-reference link enables users to quickly find
discussions of related material elsewhere in the Manual.
Top Navigation Area
The Top Navigation Area is composed of numerous tabs and clickable images.
Selecting the picture of the Veterinary Manual brings users to the home
page of the site. Selecting the Merck logo will open the Merck
home page. The labeled tabs when selected provide users with
the following information and functionality:
About – Lists the Editors, Foreword, Contributors, Development
Staff, and Publishing History of the Manual.
Index/Search Tools – Allows users to perform simple or advanced
searches based on the index of the printed Manual or to easily locate
tables by section.
Multimedia – Enables users to find images and audio and video
files within chapters and subchapters.
Help/Guides – Includes the User Guide, Abbreviations Guide (lists
abbreviations and symbols used routinely throughout the text), and the
Reference Guides (includes basic information on heart and respiratory
rates, temperatures, hematologic and serum biochemical reference ranges,
and various conversions).
