Ascending placentitis, mare
Ascending placentitis, mare

Placentitis in mares is most often due to an ascending infection from the caudal genital tract that crosses the cervix and progresses cranially. The outcome often depends on the extent of infection at the time of parturition. Inflamed chorioallantois may fail to rupture normally at the time of parturition, resulting in a hypoxic event for the fetus.
