Chewing Lice

Damalinia ovis (sheep biting louse)

Most commonly found on the dorsum

Infestation may extend cranially to head and caudally to tailhead

Bloodsucking Lice

Linognathus pedalis (sheep foot louse)

Confined to hairy parts of the foot, except in very heavy infestations

Lignognathus ovillus (sheep face and body louse)

Usually found on hairy parts of the sheep’s skin

As populations increase, lice spread to other parts of body

Lignognathus africanus (African blue louse)

Often found on flanks of sheep

Forms clusters

Slippage of wool is common
