Reticulorumenitis, calf

Postmortem photograph of tissue specimens from a 10-day-old calf with a prolonged course of reticuloruminal milk accumulation ("ruminal drinking.") Long-term contact of acidic liquid with the ruminal wall led to extensive necrosis and sloughing of the epithelium, especially in the reticulum (1) and the ventral ruminal sac (2). The submucosa shows signs of severe inflammation, contrasting with the normal epithelium of the omasum (3).
