Companion, therapy and facility, emotional support, and service dogs can all provide similar psychosocial effects, offering comfort, calming, relief from depression and stigma, and motivation. Therapy and facility dogs provide animal-assisted interventions to help people in hospitals, schools, or residential facilities; these dogs have no special legal status for public access, but facility dogs receive rigorous training preparing them to join a professional in the medical, education, or courthouse workplace environment. Emotional support dogs have legal access to housing and public transport. Service dogs trained to perform tasks related to a person’s disability are allowed full public access.
