Causes of Excessive Salivation

  1. Drugs or poisons

  2. Irritation associated with inflammation of the mouth or tongue, foreign objects in the mouth, tumors, injuries, or other defects of the mouth

  3. Infectious diseases such as rabies, the nervous form of distemper, or other convulsive disorders

  4. Motion sickness, fear, nervousness, or excitement

  5. Reluctance to swallow from irritation of the esophagus

  6. Inflamed tonsils (tonsillitis)

  7. Administration of medicine

  8. Conformational defects of the mouth

  9. Metabolic disorders such as hepatic encephalopathy or kidney failure

  10. Abscess or other blockage or disorder of the salivary glands
