The FDA and CDC are recommending that pet owners stop giving pig ear treats to their dogs. Since 2015 there have been 127 cases of human salmonellosis linked to the treats, including 26 hospitalizations. The health authorities also recommend that the treats be disposed of in a secure container and that any surfaces they have been in contact with be disinfected.

More details on the salmonellosis cases linked to pig ear treats can be read in JAVMA.

More information on salmonellosis in animals is available in the Merck Veterinary Manual.
