Officials in India have confirmed cases of African swine fever for the first time. More than 2,500 pigs in the state of Assam in the northeast part of the country have died. At present, authorities are not planning to cull entire herds, but only animals confirmed infected. Restriction of movement of pigs in the affected area has been put in place, however. The disease has also been reported in the state of Arunachal Pradesh and may have been present in India as early as February of this year.
