Bites from certain types of flies, such as black flies, deer flies, or stable flies, can be painful and sometimes become infected if not treated.
Clip ear hairs only when absolutely necessary to see the bite or bites. The hairs in a horse’s ears protect the ear against parasites and agents that spread infection.
Gently clean the area around the bite, using warm, soapy water and a clean cloth. Do not let water drip into the ear.
Apply a general antibiotic ointment or other medication as directed by your veterinarian.
To prevent further bites, use appropriate fly repellent and reduce flies in the environment by cleaning up manure.
