Questions to consider when buying a rabbit:

  • Do you have a suitable place for an indoor cage or outdoor hutch?

  • Who will be the main caregiver—a young child, an older child, or an adult?

  • Do you want a small rabbit or a large one? Larger rabbits are often calmer and sturdier. Smaller rabbits are more delicate and need especially careful handling.

  • Do you want a rabbit with long or short fur? Short-haired rabbits need brushing at least twice a week, while long-haired rabbits need more frequent grooming.

  • What other traits matter to you (like color, ear type, or sex)?

  • Do you plan to keep more than one rabbit? Rabbits must be matched carefully to be sure they get along, and opposite-sex pairs will breed unless they are spayed or neutered.

Pet rabbits can come from pet stores, humane societies, breeders, or rescue groups. Selling, trading, or giving away baby rabbits younger than 2 months old is illegal in many states. Check state and local laws before bringing a rabbit home.

Before choosing a rabbit, think carefully about who will care for it, where it will live, and what size, color, and coat type you want. Some people are allergic to rabbits or to hay. Because rabbits need hay at all times, hay allergies are important to consider before getting a rabbit.

Choose a rabbit that looks healthy and is kept in a clean environment. Ask what it's been eating and how it's been handled. Because rabbits are most active early in the morning and in the evening, visiting at those times could help you judge personality more accurately.

A healthy rabbit should have clean, shiny fur with no bald areas or visible wounds. Wet or matted fur, especially under the chin or around the tail, might signal illness. The eyes and nose should be clear, and the ears should be clean, not crusty. Healthy rabbits are usually alert, curious, and willing to move without stiffness or limping.
