Micrograph of the saprophyte B pseudomallei, growing on Ashdown's medium. After ~72 hours of incubation the colonies are flat, wrinkled, and dry with a slight metallic sheen, and between 2 and 5 mm in diameter. Colonies appear pink because they have absorbed neutral red.
