Special Needs of Outdoor Dogs

Shelter Requirements

  • Dogs need access to a clean shelter that protects them from bad weather.

  • Shelters should be big enough for the dog to stand up and turn around.

  • Shelters should have a solid roof and be off the ground to keep the dog dry.

  • Flexible doors can help keep rain and snow out.

Nutritional Requirements

  • In cold weather, outdoor dogs need twice as many calories to keep warm. They should be fed double their regular amount of high-quality dog food in smaller meals to avoid digestive issues.

Companionship Requirements

  • Outdoor dogs need companionship from other dogs and from frequent human contact.

  • Dogs housed together need enough space for all of them, or they should have separate shelters.
