Glanders is a contagious disease caused by infection with Burkholderia mallei bacteria that can be short- or long-term and is usually fatal in horses. Animals with glanders develop nodules with ulcers (sores), most commonly in the respiratory tract, lungs, and skin.
Although horses are the main species affected, people, dogs, cats, and other animals can also become infected, though cases in dogs are rare. In people, the infection is often fatal.
Prevention and control rely on early detection and removal of infected animals. Strict separation of infected animals and thorough disinfection of all housing and items that have been in contact with infected animals are required. Euthanasia is typically recommended for affected animals.
