Comparison of gross colony morphology, common pathogens

Side-by-side comparison of Nannizzia gypsea (left), Microsporum canis (center), and Trichophyton spp (right). Each of the pathogens was inoculated on split plates with dermatophyte test medium (DTM) and Sabouraud dextrose agar. DTM media will slightly alter the gross colony morphology of the pathogens; classic growth is best seen on Sabouraud agar. Trichophyton growth is slower than that of the other two species.
