Spinal osteomyelitis, snake

Spinal osteomyelitis, snake

Spinal osteomyelitis in snakes is not uncommon and is frequently associated with chronic bacterial disease, especially with Salmonella. Biopsy to culture bacteria and confirm infection may be difficult due to the proximity of the spinal cord, in which case blood culture should be pursued. Note the lysis of several spinal vertebrae in this snake with spinal osteomyelitis.
